The Original Oyster House awarded its 21st Annual Chelsea Garvin Spirit Scholarship to Mary Katherine Crowell of Bayside Academy who plans to attend Auburn University this fall.

In 2006, the scholarship was founded in loving memory of Chelsea Garvin, who was an exceptional employee, a volunteer Fish River Fire Department Rescue Diver and a talented artist. Tragically at age 19, Chelsea died in a boating accident while volunteering.

Crowell, who painted a captivating Banquet Room sunset from the Mobile Delta side, creatively framed the artwork in an oyster shell, with the sun resembling a pearl. Her community service, which includes her work on the Bayside Art Guild and her winning design of the Battleship Alabama Christmas card, reflects Chelsea Garvin’s spirit and artistic talent.

“Living on the bay is one of the greatest joys in my life, and the Oyster House embodies the beautiful scenery. My family has been going to the Oyster House for many years and it has been a comforting place for us. Some of my family are in Mobile and others are in Daphne. The Oyster House, being in the middle of the causeway, connects everyone. It would be so special if I could show off my artwork in the restaurant,” said Crowell. Her winning artwork will be on display at Original Oyster House on the Mobile Causeway for her family as well as patrons and tourists to enjoy.

The Original Oyster House (OOH) has two locations, Gulf Shores: 701 Gulf Shores Parkway on the Original Oyster House Boardwalk and Mobile: 3733 Battleship Parkway, on the Mobile Causeway. In 2016, the Original Oyster House became the first restaurant in the state of Alabama to recycle oyster shells through the Alabama Coastal Foundation and one of the only restaurants to Oyster Garden or grow stocker oysters for reef restoration. Both locations offer spectacular waterfront views and have been celebrated as the area’s finest family restaurants for over 40 years.
